From 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Oct. 4, more than 350 veterinary medicine students will give a behind-the-scenes look at the state’s only veterinary medicine college. From prospective veterinarians to anyone fascinated by animals, visitors will find something of interest at the U. of I. College of Veterinary Medicine Open House.
The event offers more than 40 fun and educational exhibits and hands-on demonstrations.
New this year will be panels of veterinarians ready to answer animal health or career questions. At noon, four clinicians from the Veterinary Teaching Hospital – an equine veterinarian, exotics veterinarian, veterinary dentist and veterinary oncologist – will explain the education and experience that goes into their specialties and answer animal owners’ questions. At 2 p.m., four U. of I. veterinary medicine alumni will showcase careers in large animal practice, shelter medicine, public health and toxicology.
Prospective veterinarians are encouraged to attend the event. Career talks will demystify the path to becoming a veterinarian and offer details about the unique U. of I. curriculum and the Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree program.
Returning this year is “Teddy Bear Repair.” Children are encouraged to bring their slightly injured stuffed animal toys, and veterinary students will patch the toys up, free of charge.
