College of Engineering faculty members, Ph.D. student honored

Aerospace engineering professor John Lambros and his Ph.D. student, Owen Kingstedt, were recognized with the 2017 Society of Experimental Mechanics M. Hetényi Award. An aerospace engineering faculty member since 2000, Lambros has simultaneously garnered SEM’s 2017 P.S. Theocaris Award, which recognizes a senior individual for distinguished, innovative and outstanding work in optical methods and experimental mechanics.

Naira Hovakimyan, the W. Grafton and Lillian B. Wilkins Professor, Schaller Faculty Scholar and University Scholar in the department of mechanical science and engineering, was recently named a Fellow of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics “for pioneering development of technical knowledge in robust adaptive control and its transition to aerospace and commercial applications.”

Randy Ewoldt, a professor of mechanical science and engineering, was named as a recipient of a Presidential Early Career Awards for Scientists and Engineers, the highest honor bestowed by the United States government on science and engineering professionals in the early stages of their independent research careers. Ewoldt’s research group studies rheology, non-Newtonian fluid mechanics, mathematical modeling and design involving soft materials. His work often involves interdisciplinary collaborations and is a combination of experiment and theory.

Dipanjan Pan, a professor of bioengineering, is a recipient of the 2016 NML Researcher Award, sponsored by the journal of Nano-Micro Letters. The award recognizes 15 outstanding researchers whose research fields are nano and micro science, with special consideration for those who have continuously made outstanding contributions to the development of science in the past three years.

Iwona Jasiuk, a professor of mechanical science and engineering, has been named the recipient of the 2016 American Advanced Materials Award from the International Association of Advanced Materials. She was selected due to her notable and outstanding contribution in the field of advanced materials science and technology.

Rohit Bhargava, a Founder Professor of Engineering and Chemistry at Illinois, has received an Agilent Thought Leader Award in recognition of his pioneering work in the development of infrared spectroscopic imaging, and its application to life sciences research.

Can Bayram and Wenjuan Zhu, both professors of electrical and computer engineering, have earned 2017 NSF CAREER Awards. Bayram is using his award to explore the fundamental properties of cubic phase light-emitting diodes that will provide the critical knowledge required to close the “green gap” in the visible spectrum. Zhu’s research seeks to establish fundamental knowledge of a new hybrid material platform that consists of novel ferroelectric metal oxides hafnium and zirconium oxide, stacked with a layer of two-dimensional material like graphene and mono/di-chalcogenides.
