College of Engineering faculty members honored

Mani Golparvar-Fard, a professor of civil and environmental engineering, won the 2016 Daniel W. Halpin Award for Scholarship in Construction from the American Society of Civil Engineers. Golparvar-Fard was cited for his “cutting-edge research focused on creating new knowledge in computer vision sensing and analytics to formalize simple yet effective project monitoring and control techniques for construction teams, as well as for his active engagement teaching philosophy.”

Qian Chen, a professor of materials science and engineering, has been awarded a Distinguished Visiting Fellowship by the Royal Academy of Engineering to conduct research at the BP International Centre for Advanced Materials. She will visit the University of Manchester in late 2016 and spend a month working with professor Grace Burke in the School of Materials on research involving the use of advanced transmission electron microscopy imaging to tackle fouling and separation challenges faced by the oil and gas industry. In January 2016, Chen was included on the Forbes magazine “30 under 30″ list, a collection of individuals who “represent the entrepreneurial, creative and intellectual best of their generation.”

Ying Diao, a professor and Dow Chemical Company Faculty Scholar in the department of chemical and biomolecular engineering, has been recognized as a pioneer on the MIT Technology Review list of “Innovators Under 35” for her work in nanotechnology and materials.

Tao Xie, a professor of computer science and Willett Faculty Scholar, was honored with a Microsoft Research Outstanding Collaborator Award. Xie has worked with Microsoft Research for the past 10 years as a visiting researcher in its Research in Software Engineering  group in Redmond, Washington, and in its Software Analytics group in China.
