College of Engineering faculty members honored

Dipanjan Pan, a professor of bioengineering, has been named a Fellow of the American Heart Association in the organization’s Council on Basic Cardiovascular Sciences.

Nam Sung Kim, a professor of electrical and computer engineering and a researcher in the Coordinated Science Laboratory, has been inducted into the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers/Association for Computing Machinery’s International Symposium on Microarchitecture (MICRO) Hall of Fame, an honor given to outstanding researchers who have consistently contributed to MICRO with high-impact research by ACM’s Special Interest Group on Microarchitecture.

Andrew Ferguson, a professor of materials science and engineering, is the recipient of the 2016 Young Investigator Award for Modeling and Simulation from the Computational Molecular Science and Engineering Forum of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers. Ferguson earned the honor for his advances in vaccine design through computational means.

The Franklin Institute announced John Bardeen Endowed Chair Emeritus Nick Holonyak Jr. as one of eight awardees of the coveted Benjamin Franklin Award for Electrical Engineering. The institute recognized him for the development of the first visible red laser and LED and the use of various alloys in colored light sources. These discoveries reduced energy consumption worldwide and contributed to the realization of optical data communications as the backbone of the internet.

Computer science professor William “Bill” D. Gropp has been named the recipient of the 2016 Association for Computing Machinery/Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Computer Society Ken Kennedy Award for highly influential contributions to the programmability of high performance parallel and distributed computers and for extraordinary service to the profession.

Cecilia Leal, a professor of materials science and engineering and the Frederick Seitz Materials Research Laboratory, is a recipient of the 2016 National Institutes of Health Director’s New Innovator Award. The award recognizes bold ideas from some of the nation’s most promising early-career scientists.
