College of Business scholarship program to benefit members of military

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. – The College of Business at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign is establishing a $250,000 education scholarship fund for military veterans and active members of the military from Illinois.

The fund will provide financial assistance to qualified applicants admitted either to the part-time MBA program on the Urbana campus or to the 20-month Executive Masters in Business Administration program that consists primarily of weekend classes at the U. of I. Illini Center in downtown Chicago.

“The college sees this as an opportunity to acknowledge and honor the sacrifice of those who serve in today’s military and to ease their transition to civilian life,” said Robert G. van der Hooning, director of executive education for the college.

Scholarships will be based on need, merit or both, said van der Hooning, who is based in Chicago.

The scholarship is not to exceed 15 percent of program cost and may be combined with grants from other military assistance programs, such as the Illinois Veteran Grant program. By combining the scholarship fund with the IVG program, qualified students may reduce overall program costs by more than 50 percent, van der Hooning said. The scholarship program will be available through 2007, he said.
