The Police Training Institute is again offering the Citizen Police Academy, an educational program that allows area residents to learn about issues faced by those in law enforcement. The academy begins April 14, with graduation June 16.
Classes will be from 6-9 p.m. Thursdays at the Police Training Institute, 1004 S. Fourth St., Champaign, and other local sites.
The goals of the academy are to provide stronger citizen and police relationships, enhance lines of communication and reduce crime in the community.
Topics of the academy include orientation to law enforcement and police training, crime scene investigation, firearms orientation and the judicial system.
Benefits of the academy to Champaign County residents include:
- Citizens and police officers have the opportunity to work together.
- Citizens become aware of problems facing police departments.
- Communication between residents and police officers is enhanced.
- Citizen involvement with the community is increased.
