Chancellor to give Derber Lecture on building an integrated workplace

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. – Nancy Cantor, the chancellor of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, will deliver the Annual Milton Derber Lecture about the role of the university in building an integrated workplace. The lecture begins at 7:30 p.m. April 8 (Tuesday) at the Wagner Education Center at the Institute of Labor and Industrial Relations, 504 E. Armory Ave., Champaign.

Cantor’s lecture, “The Supreme Court, Access to Higher Education and Building an Integrated Workplace,” will discuss the legacy of Brown v. Board of Education and the Bakke decision in establishing a broad definition of diversity, the ongoing need to pursue integration and the role of the university in the effort to build an integrated workplace.

She will argue that race-conscious affirmative action in university admissions is critical to progress and explain why she believes that cultural “proxy systems” cannot counter stereotypes and discrimination. A psychologist by training, Cantor specializes in the fields of personality and social psychology, and personality and cognition.

The Derber Lecture, sponsored by the institute, is free and open to the public.

Study shows new hope for commercially attractive lithium extraction from spent batteries

A new study shows that lithium — a critical element used in rechargeable batteries and susceptible to supply chain disruption — can be recovered from battery waste using an electrochemically driven recovery process. The method has been tested on commonly used types of lithium-containing batteries and demonstrates economic viability with the potential to simplify operations, minimize costs and increase the sustainability and attractiveness of the recovery process for commercial use.
