Campus honored with award for excellence in diversity

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. — INSIGHT Into Diversity magazine recognized the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign for its diversity efforts by including the campus among the 96 schools receiving the 2018 Higher Education Excellence in Diversity Award.

The Urbana campus has received the HEED award for six straight years.

“We take a detailed approach to reviewing each application in deciding who will be named a HEED Award recipient,” said Lenore Pearlstein, the publisher of INSIGHT Into Diversity magazine. “Our standards are high, and we look for institutions where diversity and inclusion are woven into the work being accomplished every day across their campus.”

The recipients of the 2018 award will be featured in the magazine’s November issue.

“We are grateful for the recognition implicit in the HEED Award, as it truly does reflect our collective success in making this campus a more inclusive, welcoming and diverse setting,” said Rusty Barcelo, a special assistant to Chancellor Robert Jones. “At the same time, we temper that sense of achievement with the knowledge that the struggle is ongoing – yesterday’s accomplishments will be supplanted by tomorrow’s challenges.”
