Campus Faculty Association to award Social Justice Scholarships

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. — The Campus Faculty Association will award up to five $1,000 scholarships to undergraduate students at the University of Illinois’ Urbana campus who demonstrate a commitment to social justice in the community.

Applicants’ social justice work may take many forms, including volunteer or paid work performed through nonprofit organizations, but can include less formally structured activities, said Bruce Rosenstock, president of the Campus Faculty Association.

“Whatever forms they may take, these activities are not simply charity work, but efforts that seek to improve the living and working conditions for less advantaged members of the community in concrete and sustainable ways,” said Rosenstock, a professor of religion at the university.

Examples of eligible activities could include advocating for patients’ or incarcerated people’s rights or education, civil rights activities, working for food pantries or meal delivery programs, or labor organizing or strike support, Rosenstock said.

To be eligible, an applicant must be currently enrolled as an undergraduate in good standing at the Urbana campus with at least one semester of study remaining before graduation. Preference will be given to students who will be involved in social justice activities during the 2017 spring semester.

Applicants should submit a curriculum vitae, a 250-word essay describing their social justice activities, and the name and contact information for one reference who can discuss their social justice work.

Application materials should be emailed as a single pdf file to campusfacultyassoc@gmail.com.

Applications will be accepted Sept. 15 through Oct. 15. The awards will be announced Dec. 1.

The Campus Faculty Association is an advocacy organization for faculty and other campus workers committed to shared governance, academic freedom and a strong faculty voice on campus.
