Body-image issues involving gay men are subject of new I space exhibition

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. – Issues related to gay male body image will be explored in a new exhibition on view June 10 through July 9 at I space, the Chicago gallery of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

“Skin Deep,” which features prints, mixed media assemblages and other work by Bruce Eves, Karl Moehl, Marcy Sperry and Billy Stroud, “only scratches the surface yet explores many issues, images and facets of the gay male body image through art,” according to Stroud, a Bloomington, Ill.-based artist, art educator and U. of I. alumnus who organized the show.

Eves, an artist who lives in Toronto, is a co-founder of the International Gay History Archive, now housed in the Rare Books and Manuscripts division of the New York Public Library. Mohl is an artist, writer and emeritus professor at Bradley University in Peoria, Ill. Sperry is a Chicago-based art educator involved in youth-based HIV/AIDS awareness, and co-instructor for a collaborative Web project at Street-Level Youth Media.

An opening reception is scheduled to take place from 5-7 p.m. on June 10 at the gallery, 230 W. Superior St., Chicago.

I space gallery hours are Tuesday through Saturday, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.
