  • Art of Science 7.0: Images show the beauty of research

Temple of Demeter, an image from research by Rong Ma, Yousoon Baek, Mayandi Sivaguru and Dean Riechers, shows the sturdy shapes of the cells of a sorghum plant. These cells form part of the sheath that protects the growing plant shoot. Crops are exposed to many stressful growing conditions in the field, including exposure to herbicides. The bright colors seen here mark the presence of proteins that help protect the plant from such exposures. The goal of the research is to develop new ways to protect crops from damage caused by herbicides and other stressors.
