    Illinois communication professor Cara Finnegan studies the history of photography and its role in public life, with a focus in recent years on the photographing of presidents over nearly two centuries.

    Finnegan presented some of her research at the 2015 Chicago Humanities Festival in a talk entitled “A Presidency in Pictures.” Her previous book, “Making Photography Matter,” looked at how people viewed and experienced certain photos at the time they first were made public, including those of Abraham Lincoln and the Civil War dead.
