Baum Lecture on civil liberties, civil rights to be given Oct. 3

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. Dorothy E. Roberts, a professor at Northwestern University School of Law, will deliver this years annual David C. Baum Memorial Lecture on Civil Liberties and Civil Rights.

Her talk, titled “Child Welfare and Civil Rights,” will begin at 4 p.m. Oct. 3 (Wednesday) in the Max L. Rowe Auditorium of the University of Illinois College of Law, 504 E. Pennsylvania Ave., Champaign.

Roberts has written extensively on the interplay of gender, race and class in legal issues concerning reproduction and motherhood. She is the author of “Killing the Black Body” (1997) and has published more than 50 articles and essays in scholarly journals, newspapers and magazines.

She is now completing a book, “Shattered Bonds: The Color of Child Welfare.” In addition to her law school appointment, she is a fellow at the Institute for Policy Research and an affiliate at the Joint Center for Poverty Research at Northwestern.

The Baum lecture is free and open to the public.
