CHAMPAIGN, Ill. — Architecture students from the Urbana-Champaign campus of the University of Illinois took top honors in the “Keys to the Future Design Competition” sponsored by the Home Builders Association of Greater Chicago.
Jessica Gilbert, Tolono, won the top prize of $5,000. Second- and third-place winners, who received $3,000 and $2,000, respectively, were A. Michael Pierson, Lansing, and Jereme Smith, Morton. Manuel Hernandez, Chicago, won one of three honorable mention awards.
All four winners were enrolled in architecture professor Robert Selby’s fourth-year architectural design studio.
The theme of the competition was “New Concepts in Residential Architecture.”
Competitors were drawn from the UI’s two architecture schools, located at the Urbana-Champaign and Chicago campuses. About 50 students from both campuses worked on projects for the juried competition during the spring 2000 semester; of those, 25 finalists were invited to submit their work for judging June 8 at I space, UIUC’s Chicago art gallery.
Award winners were announced at a reception the following evening at I space. The winning projects will be displayed at an awards program hosted by the association Oct. 7 at Navy Pier in Chicago.
