Architectural designs on limited view at Figure One

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. – A new display of a very old assignment will open Friday

(Feb. 11) at Figure One, the University of Illinois School of Art and Design exhibition space at 116 N. Walnut St., Champaign.

Students in the senior-level architectural design studio led by architecture professor Stewart Hicks were assigned to come up with submissions to the international design competition to re-imagine Chicago’s iconic Tribune Tower. The original competition took place almost a century ago, in 1922.

That competition inspired a group of architects in the 1980s to publish their own speculative designs, which they dubbed “Late Submissions.” The Illinois students have developed their own “super speculative” submissions, which they’re calling “Late Late Submissions.”

The student designs, along with images and information from the 1922 competition and the 1980s submissions, will be on view for three days. This event is part of Open House – Figure One’s ongoing February series designed to offer small samplings of the current activity in the College of Fine and Applied Arts. For a complete listing of events, visit www.seefigureone.org.

An opening reception will take place from 6-8 p.m. Friday. Figure One is open Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Saturdays 11 a.m.-4 p.m. and Fridays 4-9 p.m.
