Annual spring open house at Japan House set for April 17

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. – A variety of traditional Japanese arts will be demonstrated and displayed April 17 at the annual spring open house at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign’s Japan House.

The educational and cultural center, located at 2000 S. Lincoln Ave., Urbana, will open its doors to the public that day from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Activities planned include lectures on Kabuki theater, at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m., presented by Shozo Sato, professor emeritus of art and design and the founding director of Japan House.

Throughout the day, tea ceremonies will be conducted by members of the Urbana-Champaign Association of Chado Urasenke Tankokai. Also, examples of ikebana (Japanese flower arranging) created by members of the Illinois Prairie Chapter of the Ikenobo Society of America and calligraphy by students of Japan House instructor Yoko Muroga will be exhibited.
