Alcohol Awareness Week to be observed on campus through Oct. 31

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. — The University of Illinois will observe National Collegiate Alcohol Awareness Week through Oct. 31. Numerous organizations around campus will be sponsoring events and activities, including the following selected events.

Freshman residents of UI residence halls and certified housing will receive copies of the Alcohol 101 CD from the Dean of Students’ office. The interactive CDs show viewers the consequences of alcohol misuse and promotes personal safety techniques. Freshmen receiving the CDs will be asked to complete surveys before and after using the CDs. Those who complete both surveys will be eligible to enter a drawing for prizes. The Alcohol 101 CD was produced at the UI in conjunction with The Century Council.

Tuesday (Oct. 17), 8 p.m.: Special Populations Radio Talk Show on Alcohol Awareness on WBML (89.3 FM, channel 37 on cable television).

Wednesday (Oct. 18), 10 a.m. – 3 p.m., on the Quad: Illini Connection student group will offer demonstrations of the Fatal Vision goggles that simulate the impairment caused by alcohol consumption. Yellow ribbons will be distributed that can be redeemed for free soda at participating bars Oct. 19-21.

Wednesday (Oct. 18), 9 p.m., Daniels Hall main lounge, 1010 W. Green St., Urbana: Mocktails party. Thursday (Oct. 19), 7:30 p.m., Taft/Van Doren Lounge, 1213 S. Fourth St., Champaign: “Singled Out” contest, based on the MTV game show, with contestants wearing Fatal Vision goggles.

Oct. 24, 6 p.m., south patio behind Illini Union: Candlelight vigil honoring victims of alcohol-related accidents. The Centennial High Choir will perform and testimonials will be given by Judge Michael Q. Jones and the parent of children killed by a drunken driver.

Oct. 26, 8 p.m., Garner Hall main lounge, 201 E. Gregory Drive, Champaign: Mocktails party.

Oct. 27, 9 p.m. to 12 midnight, Illinois Street Residence Halls, Townsend Rooms B and C, 1010 W. Illinois St., Urbana: Mocktails and Halloween extravaganza. Party will include an Alcohol 101 presentation, Fatal Vision goggles demonstrations, Halloween movies, a Tarot card reader/psychic and games.
