Since the early 1970s, Student Legal Services has been providing legal services to U. of I. students and making them aware of the law. In-court representation is available in many cases; priority is given to matters for which a student would be financially unable to retain a lawyer. This is determined by income guidelines established by the Student Legal Service Plan. It is believed that a majority of the students will qualify for individual representation under those guidelines. Income guidelines do not apply to landlord/tenant cases.

University Housing’s 23 undergraduate and two graduate residence halls are home to more than 10,000 students who eat more than 3 million meals a year in the six dining halls. University Housing also manages 1,150 apartments on campus for graduate and upper-division undergraduate students and their families. University Housing’s constant rate program guarantees that room and board, like tuition, is fixed for up to four years while a student lives there. Students who live in University Housing for more than one year are more likely to graduate, and more likely to graduate in four years, than students who move out after just one year.
