Michael B. Bragg, professor and head of aerospace engineering, was elected a fellow of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics. The institute is the world’s leading professional society in aeronautics and astronautics. Presentation of the new fellows will take place during the International Air and Space Symposium in Washington, D.C., in April.
Nicholas Holonyak Jr., professor of electrical and computer engineering, will accept the 2004 Washington Award at the Chicagoland Engineering Awards Benefit on Feb. 27 in Chicago. The award is given annually to an engineer whose professional achievements have preeminently advanced the welfare of humankind. Holonyak was recognized for inventing the light emitting diode (LED).
Daniel Reed and Jiawei Han, professors of computer science, were named fellows for 2003 by the Association for Computer Machinery in recognition of their contributions to the field of computer science and information technology. Reed, a Gutgsell Professor, is director of the National Center for Supercomputing Applications and the National Computational Science Alliance. Reed’s ongoing research interests include tools and techniques for capturing and analyzing the performance of parallel systems via instrumentation and presentation techniques and collaborative virtual environments for real-time performance analysis. Han is a leader in the data mining and database fields and his research interests include data warehousing, stream data mining, Web mining, spatiotemporal data mining and bio-data mining. ACM is the oldest and largest society for scientists and professionals in computer science.
The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Inc. has honored Josep Torrellas, professor of computer science, and William Hammack, professor in chemical and biomolecular engineering and curriculum coordinator for educational technology.
Torrellas, a Willett scholar, was named an IEEE fellow for 2004 in honor of his contributions to shared-memory multiprocessors. Hammack won the 2004 IEEE-USA Award, which recognizes outstanding journalistic efforts that lead to a better public understanding of the contributions of engineering professionals to the enhancement and expansion of social, economic and cultural aspects of life. The awards will be conferred at the IEEE’s March 2004 meeting in Atlanta.The IEEE, a nonprofit technical professional organization, is a leading authority in technical areas ranging from computer engineering, biomedical technology and telecommunications to electric power, aerospace and consumer electronics.

Gene E. Robinson, professor of entomology and director of the neuroscience program, was honored as the G. William Arends Professor of Integrative Biology at an investiture ceremony Sept. 10. Robinson’s research into the genetic and physiological regulation of behavior at the individual and colony levels in social insects, particularly honey bees, generated a case for a new field of study – sociogenomics.

The UI Press won two design awards in the Chicago Book Clinic 2003 Book & Media Show. “Long Time, No See,” by Beth Finke, designed by Paula Newcomb, won Honorable Mention; and “Pottery, Politics, Art,” by Richard Mohr, designed by Cope Cumpston, won an Award of Excellence.“Pottery, Politics, Art” relates to the current exhibit at the Krannert Art Museum.
