LIBERAL ARTS AND SCIENCES

Kenneth M. Cuno, a professor of history, won the 2015 Albert Hourani Book Award from the Middle East Studies Association for his book “Modernizing Marriage: Family, Ideology, and Law in Nineteenth- and Early Twentieth-Century Egypt,” which explores the evolution of marriage and marital relations, shedding new light on the social and cultural history of Egypt. The award was created in 1991 to recognize outstanding published works in Middle East studies. The award was named for Hourani to recognize his long and distinguished career as teacher and mentor.

LIBRARY

William H. Mischo, the head of the Grainger Engineering Library Information Center, will be the inaugural holder of the Berthold Family Professorship in Information Access and Discovery. He was selected because of his interest, expertise and academic abilities in creating, directing and maintaining accessible and searchable digital data platforms for end users.

“We’re very proud of Bill. Throughout his remarkable career, his research and practice have advanced the work of the profession and have distinguished him,” said John Wilkin, the university librarian and dean of libraries. “He embodies the Jeffersonian ideal, sharing his efforts generously in ways that advance the work of his colleagues without diminishing his own research agenda.”

A gift from U. of I. alumnus and longtime library supporter Carol A. Berthold established the professorship.
