Computer Science and Bioengineering professor Tandy Warnow has been named a 2015 Fellow of the Association for Computing Machinery. In the citation for this award, Warnow is recognized “for contributions to mathematical theory, algorithms, and software for large-scale molecular phylogenetics and historical linguistics.”

Alan Hansen, a professor of agricultural and biological engineering, has been recognized with an Excellence in College and University Teaching Award for the North Central Region by the Association of Public and Land-grant Universities. The award is sponsored by the Board on Agriculture Assembly and the National Institute of Food and Agriculture of the U. S. Department of Agriculture.

Computer Science senior lecturer Cinda Heeren has been named the recipient of the 2015 American Society for Engineering Education Illinois-Indiana Section Teacher of the Year Award. Heeren earned the award for her creative teaching methodologies, positive impact on students, development of innovative courses, and work in community outreach. 

Henrique Reis, a professor of industrial and enterprise systems engineering, was bestowed the American Society of Mechanical Engineers Founders Award, which is given by ASME’s Nondestructive Evaluation, Diagnosis, and Prognosis Division. The award recognizes senior personnel who have at least 25 years of experience in the field of nondestructive evaluation and structural health monitoring. The recipients of this award are chosen based on their contributions in the areas of publication impact, industrial work with impact on cost, reliability and availability of systems being inspected or monitored, pervasive use of the invented systems and technologies worldwide, and standardization of the NDPD methods. 

Jennifer Bernhard, a professor of electrical and computer engineering and the associate dean for research in the College of Engineering, has been elected to the IEEE’s Board of Directors as the director-elect of its Division IV, a group of seven engineering disciplines including magnetics, antennas and propagation, microwave theory and techniques, and broadcast technology. 

SCHOOL OF SOCIAL WORK

Tara Powell, a professor in the School of Social Work, developed a school-based intervention called Journey of Hope. Journey of Hope was inducted into the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration’s National Registry of Evidence-based Programs and Practices. The registry promotes the adoption of scientifically established behavioral health interventions.
