Kim Graber, a professor of kinesiology and community health, will be honored with the Research Council Distinguished Service Award by the Society of Health and Physical Educators.
The award, which recognizes recipients for their significant contributions to the research council over an extended period of time, will be presented at the C.H. McCloy Research Lecture and Breakfast on April 7, during the SHAPE America National Convention and Expo in Minneapolis.
“Kim Graber has been a tireless worker for SHAPE America and has held many of the offices in the organization through the years,” said Phillip Ward, chair of the council. “In her various roles on the research council, she has directed, shaped and promoted council policies and agendas, making a significant contribution.”
In addition to serving as president of the National Association for Sport and Physical Education, now called SHAPE America, Graber has been on numerous committees and held a variety of leadership positions. She has been president and secretary of the research consortium, which is now the research council, as well as an active member of its ethics committee, publications committee, executive committee and finance committee. She is also a SHAPE America Research Fellow and was program planner for the national convention.
Graber’s current research interests include children’s wellness, legislative policy mandates and the scholarship of teaching and learning. She is the director of the university’s Campus Honors Program, director of the Teaching Academy for the College of Applied Health Sciences and vice chair of the Faculty Senate.
In addition to writing the invited chapter for the Handbook of Research on Teaching, Fourth Edition, Graber has authored more than 70 chapters or articles in numerous journals, served as editor for two special features and three monographs and has presented at dozens of national and international conferences. She also is the co-author of a book titled “Physical Education and Activity for Elementary Classroom Teachers.”
The annual C.H. McCloy Research Lecture provides a forum for a distinguished leader in the SHAPE America disciplines to present cutting-edge research findings of interest to researchers and practitioners alike.
