Abbott Power Plant hosts open house Nov. 6

Energizing the U. of I. since 1941, Abbott Power Plant provides safe, reliable, environmentally compliant and cost-effective energy to support the mission of the university.

Students, faculty and staff members are invited to attend Abbott’s open house from 1-3 p.m. Nov. 6 as part of its 75th anniversary celebration. Registration is available online.

The open house will include a 45-minute guided tour of the facility featuring an up-close look at gas and steam turbines, and an overview of Abbott’s history, emission- control technologies and boilers. Attendees will be able to interact with staff members and vendors, view informational displays, watch an energy production video and enjoy snacks and refreshments.

Abbott is a combined heat and power plant, generating steam that is used to produce electricity as well as heat the campus. Through this process, Abbott maximizes energy production from the fuel it consumes.

Abbott Power Plant produces enough electricity annually to power approximately 25,000 typical U.S. homes.

More information is online.
