J. Loreena Ivens

J. Loreena Ivens, professional scientist emerita at the Illinois
State Water Survey, died Jan. 21 at the Americana Nursing Home,
Urbana. She was 72.

Ivens earned a bachelor's degree in journalism in 1945 and a
master's degree in communications in 1947, both from the UI. She
was an instructor in rhetoric from 1947 to 1948 and an editor at
the Institute of Aviation from 1950 to 1951.

She was an instructor in English/journalism at Illinois State
University from 1948 to 1950, and was editor of WINGS newspaper
at Chanute Air Force Base, Rantoul, from 1951 to 1960. She was a
technical writer for the Water Survey from 1960 to 1980, when she
became head of the communications and publications unit. She
served in that capacity until her retirement in 1987.

She was a senior member of the Society for Technical
Communications and a member of the American Association for the
Advancement of Science, Women in Communications Inc., and the
National League of American Pen Women. In 1984, Ivens received
the YWCA Achievement Award in Communications and became a Paul
Harris Fellow of the Rotary International Foundation.

Survivors include her husband, Ralph; one sister; three nieces;
five nephews; and numerous great-nieces and great-nephews.

Carol Kyle

A memorial service for Carol Kyle, a professor of English who
died Jan. 17, is set for 4 p.m. Friday at St. Patrick's Catholic
Church, 708 W. Main St., Urbana.

Memorial contributions may be sent to the UI department of
English, 208 English Building, where they will be used to
establish a poetry prize for graduate students in English.
