Minnesota scholar heads Spanish, Italian, Portuguese department

Ronald W. Sousa was named the head of the department of Spanish, Italian
and Portuguese by the UI Board of Trustees at its meeting Friday in Urbana.
Sousa, who has been chairman of the department of cultural studies and
comparative literature at the University of Minnesota, Minneapolis, begins
his new duties immediately. He succeeds Ivan A. Schulman, who resigned as
head to return to teaching and research. Sousa will hold the rank of
professor on indefinite tenure on an academic basis. 

Prior to serving a year as the chairman of the U. of M. department of
cultural studies and comparative literature, Sousa was a professor of
Spanish and Portuguese and of comparative literature at Minnesota for 11
years. From 1983 to 1987 and from 1990 to 1992, he chaired the university's
department of comparative literature.  He joined the U. of M. in 1974. 

Sousa also taught at the University of Texas at Austin from 1971 to 1974
and at the University of California at Berkeley in 1977.
