Campus parking

Time to renew parking permits

If you have a campus parking permit and wish to renew, visit the parking Web site at www.fs.uiuc.edu/parking for instructions and more information. Your hangtag will be mailed to you.

Because of the delay in issuing FY09 parking permits, citations will not be issued to current permit holders displaying the FY08 hangtags in their designated lots. New hangtags must be displayed by Aug. 18.

If you are on payroll deduction and are not renewing your permit, you must go online and stop the payroll deduction. Failure to do this will result in non-refundable deductions.

Call 333-3530 if you need assistance with the online process.

Crop Sciences Research and Education Center

Agronomy Day is Aug. 21

Agronomy Day 2008 will be Aug. 21 at the Crop Sciences Research and Education Center, south of the UI campus off of St. Mary’s Road on South Wright Street Extended. The theme for this year’s event is “Energizing Agriculture.”

This 52nd consecutive Agronomy Day is a partnership among several academic units in the UI’s College of Agricultural, Consumer and Environmental Sciences.

A special program at noon will feature the issue of biofuels.

“Agronomy Day provides our faculty with the chance to discuss their latest research findings with clientele from Illinois and neighboring states,” said Bob Dunker, the superintendent of the South Farms and chairperson for Agronomy Day. “The major focus of this year’s program will be the future of bioenergy in agriculture.”

Tour topics will cover research on bioenergy, continuous corn, tillage and nutrients placement, corn rootworm management, weed management, corn nematodes, soybean pathology, and wheat diseases.

Events will begin at 7 a.m. Hourlong wagon tours around the research plots will repeat every half-hour until noon as groups are available. Lunch will be available at a nominal charge.

Additional information is available at www.cropsci.uiuc.edu/agronomyday or by contacting Sharon Conatser, 333-4256.

Downs Intellectual Freedom Award

Nomination deadline is Oct. 15

The Graduate School of Library and Information Science at the UI seeks nominations for the Robert B. Downs Intellectual Freedom Award. The deadline for nominations is Oct. 15.

Given annually, the award acknowledges individuals or groups who have furthered the cause of intellectual freedom, particularly as it affects libraries and information centers and the dissemination of ideas. Granted to those who have resisted censorship or efforts to abridge the freedom of individuals to read or view materials of their choice, the award may be in recognition of a particular action or long-term interest in, and dedication to, the cause of intellectual freedom.

The award was established in 1969 by GSLIS faculty members to honor Dean Emeritus Downs on the occasion of his 25th anniversary as the director of the school.

Greenwood Publishing Group Inc., Westport, Conn., provides an honorarium to the recipient and co-hosts the reception in honor of the recipient. The reception and award ceremony for the award will take place in January 2009 during the American Library Association’s Midwinter Meeting in Denver.

Letters of nomination and documentation about the nominee should be sent by e-mail to unsworth@illinois.edu with a copy to weech@illinois.edu or in paper form to John Unsworth, dean, GSLIS, 501 E. Daniel St., Champaign, MC-493. Questions should be directed to Professor Terry Weech at weech@illinois.edu.
