“60 Minutes” newsman Mike Wallace was honored Oct. 13 in New York City as the first recipient of the Illinois Prize for Lifetime Achievement in Journalism. The prize honors individuals whose career contributions to public affairs reporting represent the highest and best achievements of American journalism. “It’s our way of reminding the nation and young journalists and journalism students that great public affairs journalism is alive and well in the era of infotainment, cable TV bluster and the blogosphere,” said Walt Harrington, the head of the journalism department at Illinois. “Decade after decade, through all the changes, Mike Wallace found a way to do superb, important journalism for half a century. It took skill, determination, brilliance and bravery.” Walter Cronkite greets Mike Wallace at the evening’s reception. Cronkite was accompanied by Joanna Simon, opera singer and sister of Carly Simon. Right: Wallace shares a laugh with Walt Harrington, head of the UI department of journalism. Harrington said that Wallace donated the monetary award of $10,000 back to the department of journalism and, through matching funds from Canon USA, CBS President Leslie Moonves, the UI Office of the Provost and the College of Communications, $50,000 was raised for the purchase of broadcast/multi-media equipment for journalism students.
