Solar powered
Above, the final piece of a three-piece modular home, the UI’s entry in the 2007 Solar Decathlon, is hauled on Kirby Avenue on June 15. The solar-powered home, designed and built in a warehouse near Abbott Power Plant, was moved to a site near St. Mary’s Road and South Lincoln Avenue, where the house will be completed and tested before it is transported to the national mall in Washington, D.C., for the contest.

At left, the first section of the home is being lowered onto a concrete pad. The UI is one of 20 universities competing in the Solar Decathlon, which will be Oct. 2-20 and is co-sponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy. The house was designed and built by a team of students.
