Engineering | LAS | UI Press | engineering Nicholas Holonyak Jr., professor of electrical and computer engineering, will accept the 2004 Washington Award at the Chicagoland Engineering Awards Benefit on Feb. 27 in Chicago. The award is given annually to an engineer whose professional achievements have preeminently advanced the welfare of humankind. Holonyak was recognized for inventing the light emitting diode (LED). Daniel Reed and Jiawei Han, professors of computer science, were named fellows for 2003 by the Association for Computer Machinery in recognition of their contributions to the field of computer science and information technology. Reed, a Gutgsell Professor, is director of the National Center for Supercomputing Applications and the National Computational Science Alliance. Reed’s ongoing research interests include tools and techniques for capturing and analyzing the performance of parallel systems via instrumentation and presentation techniques and collaborative virtual environments for real-time performance analysis. Han is a leader in the data mining and database fields and his research interests include data warehousing, stream data mining, Web mining, spatiotemporal data mining and bio-data mining.
