UI professor to receive Global Energy Prize
Nick Holonyak Jr., a John Bardeen Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering and Physics at the UI, has been selected as a 2003 recipient of the Global Energy Prize from Russia. He shares the $900,000 prize with Gennady Mesiats of the Russian Academy of Sciences and Yan Douglas Smith of Titan Pulse Sciences Division.
Two UI professors named Guggenheim Fellows
Two UI professors are among the 184 artists, scholars and scientists named as 2003 Guggenheim Fellows.

deaths
Phillip Olaf Berge, 61, died April 15 at his home in Champaign. Berge had worked as a physics teaching laboratory specialist in the physics department for six years, resigning in 1994. Memorials: Lake Forest College Science Equipment Fund, Lake Forest, Ill.

Peggy Ann Eichelberger, 66, died April 18 at her home in Fisher. Eichelberger had worked as a typing clerk III in the UI Housing Division for nearly nine years, resigning in 1988.

Norman George Philip Krausz, 83, died April 15 at Royal Palm Convalescent Center in Vero Beach, Fla. Krausz was a professor of agricultural law, heading that program for 20 years before retiring in 1977. Memorials: Neurofibromatosis Foundation, P.O. Box 6, Algonquin, IL 60102-0006.

Minerva Pinnell, 90, died Sept. 26 at Paris Community Hospital, Paris, Ill. Pinnell was an emeritus professor of art and design. She taught at the UI for 23 years, retiring in 1979. Memorials: Kansas Community Memorial Library or a charity of the donor’s choice.

Linda Lee Reed, 55, died April 19 at her home in Champaign. Reed had worked at the UI as extra help office assistant II from October 2000 through August 2001. Memorials: Susan G. Komen Foundation at www.komen.org.

William "Max" M. Rex, 86, died April 15 at the Champaign County Nursing Home, Urbana. He worked in the Division of Operation and Maintenance for 33 years. Memorials: AMVETS White Clover Fund, 203 W. Hill St., Champaign, IL 61820.

Sirpa H. Saarinen, 41, died April 17 at her home in Mahomet. Saarinen was a research programmer at the National Center for Supercomputing Applications and had worked at the UI since 1988.

Jacqulyn L. Williams, 71, died April 12 at her home in Sidney. Williams worked at the UI for 25 years, retiring as a maid for the Illini Union in 1997. She returned as extra help from August 1999 through August 2002. Memorials: Carle Hospice, the American Cancer Society or Shaklee Cares.
