Woese wins Crafoord Prize
Microbiologist Carl R. Woese has won the $500,000 Crafoord Prize in Biosciences given by the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences. The annual prize, announced Feb. 13, marks accomplishments in scientific fields not covered by the Nobel Prizes in science, which the academy also selects.

Native American House opens in temporary location

Native American House, a new cultural house on the Urbana campus, was inaugurated with a grand opening reception on Feb. 6.

UI officials work to resolve pig dispute
The UI is working with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to resolve an issue that arose as a result of a Feb. 5 FDA report about what the agency said was a potential violation of regulations regarding the sale of the offspring of transgenic pigs.
New trustees appointed, plans for new Alumni Center approved
Plans for the $15 million Alice Campbell Alumni Center on the Urbana campus were unveiled at the UI Board of Trustees meeting Feb. 12 in Chicago.
New emphasis at business school reflected in new name
As the world of business changes, so does the UI College of Commerce and Business Administration. The college has developed a blueprint for a new model of business school where teamwork, entrepreneurship, technology and diversity will be emphasized in an ongoing program of self-improvement.
Senate members express support for chancellor
The Urbana-Champaign Senate reiterated its support of Chancellor Nancy Cantor at its Feb. 17 meeting at Foellinger Auditorium.
Six University Scholars named at Urbana
Six UI faculty members have been chosen to be 2002 University Scholars. The program recognizes excellence while helping to identify and retain the university’s most talented teachers, scholars and researchers.
Two professors elected to National Academy of Engineering
Two UI researchers – Joseph E. Greene and Peter W. Sauer – have been elected to membership in the National Academy of Engineering, the academy announced Feb. 14.

James Ellis Hall, 54, died Feb. 3 in Chicago. Hall was a cook at the UI from 1979 to 1985.

Jack C. Everly, 74, died Jan. 31. Everly was a professor of agricultural communications and served as the head of the Office of Instructional Media and Television during his 42 years at the UI. He retired in 1997. Memorials: University Presbyterian Church Growth Fund, Gallatin United Methodist Church, Alzheimer’s Association Miami Valley Chapter or the NACTA Journal.

V. Milton Ewing, 89, died Jan. 13 at Plains Regional Medical Center, Clovis, Ill. Ewing worked at the UI for 17 years, retiring in 1982.

Bertha M. McCarty, 85, died Feb. 14 at Provena Covenant Medical Center, Urbana. McCarty worked for the UI for 20 years, retiring in 1975 as a maid in the Housing Division. Memorials: Church of Christ, St. Joseph, or a charity of the donor’s choice.

Mary Jo Pelafas, 71, died Feb. 12 at Provena Covenant Medical Center, Urbana. Pelafas worked in the physics department for 23 years. Memorials: St. Patrick Catholic Church Youth Fund.

Donald Harold Percival, 78, died Jan. 30 at his Champaign home. Percival joined the Small Homes Council at the UI in 1956 and was a research professor of wood technology and utilization – forestry. He retired in 1989. He also was a longtime member of the Medicare 7, 8 or 9 Dixieland group.

Barbara Louise VanDorn, 70, died Feb. 6 at ManorCare Health Services, Champaign. VanDorn retired from the UI Division of Operation and Maintenance. Memorials: Provena Covenant Hospice Care Program, 1400 W. Park St., Urbana, IL 61801.

Lloyd D. Witter, 79, died Feb. 10 at Carle Foundation Hospital, Urbana. Witter was a UI professor of food microbiology/food science from 1956 until he retired in 1992. Memorials: Leukemia Research Foundation, 820 Davis St., Suite 420, Evanston, IL 60201-9535.

Beulah J. Drom, 98, died Jan. 17 at Meadowbrook Healthcare Center, Urbana. (Her name was misspelled in the initial notice, Jan. 23.)
