Charles H. Anders Sr., 88, died Dec. 7 at his home in Sidney. Anders retired from the UI in 1984 as a laboratory assistant III for the department of animal sciences. Hebegan working at the UI in 1953. Memorials: Unity High School Athletic Department.

Effie Gray Bailey, 98, died Nov. 12 at Kaiser Hospital, Richmond, Calif. Bailey retired from the UI in 1971 as a laboratory assistant II with the department of microbiology. She worked at the UI for 15 years.

Patricia Louise Baldwin,
60, died Dec. 28 at her home in Beaufort, N.C. From 1985 to 1990, Baldwin worked in the UI Survey Research Laboratory as a field interviewer. Memorials: Hospice Foundation of Carteret County, 3601 Bridges St., Suite F, Moorehead City, NC 28557.

Robert Bilger, 76, died Dec. 26 in Minneapolis. Bilger was a UI professor emeritus of speech and hearing science, retiring in 1999. His field was audiology and experimental psychology. He worked at the UI for 22 years, serving as head of speech and hearing science from 1980-1986. He had been a professor of psychology since 1981. Memorials: Bob Bilger Fund at the UI Foundation, Harker Hall, MC-386. Donations will support graduate students in audiology.

Dee Brown, 94, died Dec. 12. Brown, author of "Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee," was UI’s librarian of agriculture from 1948-1972 and also was a professor from 1962 until 1972.

Ralph Bradley Brown, 82, died Jan. 16 at Champaign County Nursing Home, Urbana. Brown had worked at the Coordinated Sciences Laboratory and Materials Engineering Research Laboratory. He retired in 1990 as a senior research engineer with 19 years of service.

Peter E. Carlson, 65, died Dec. 18 at ManorCare Health Services, Urbana. Carlson was a building service worker in the UI Division of Operation and Maintenance when he retired last year. He had worked at the UI since 1980.

Helen L. Colbert, 79, died Jan. 3 at her home in Savoy. Colbert worked as a secretary for the UI Institute of Aviation for 32 years, until her retirement in 1991. Memorials: American Cancer Society or First United Methodist Church, Champaign.

Marvin Clinton Combs, 56, died Jan. 4 at his Danville home. Combs worked at O&M from 1985 until he retired in 2000 as engineering technician III. Memorials: Old Union Church of Christ, Danville.

Mary I. Dean, 96, died Dec. 18 at Provena Covenant Medical Center, Urbana. From 1959 to 1974, Dean served as an admissions counselor for the UI. Memorials: Champaign County 4-H District or to WILL-TV.

Rex F. Dix, 84, died Jan. 15 in Knoxville, Tenn. Dix was an accountant I for agriculture administration, retiring in 1981 after 15 years at the UI.

Rose Downing, 75, died Dec. 12 at her Urbana home. Downing was a kitchen helper in the UI’s Illini Union. She retired in 1991 after more than 16 years of service.

Beaulah J. Drom, 98, died Jan. 17 at Meadowbrook Healthcare Center, Urbana. Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. Feb. 15 at Clark-Lindsey Village Hueghy Lounge, 101 W. Windsor Road, Urbana. Drom came to the UI in 1948 and held various teaching and administrative positions in the former College of Physical Education. She retired in 1970 as associate professor emeritus. Memorials: Beulah Drom Scholarship Fund, UI Foundation, Harker Hall, MC-386.

Richard T. Dunkman, 59, died Dec. 13 at Provena Covenant Medical Center, Urbana. Dunkman retired from the UI in 1997 as a sub-foreman construction laborer with O&M. He worked for the university for 35 years. Memorials: Living Word Fellowship Building Fund.

Dana Marsha Ewell, 55, died Jan. 4 at Carle Foundation Hospital, Urbana. Ewell had been academic programs coordinator and lecturer in the department of journalism since she came to the UI in 1990. Memorials: UI department of journalism or the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.

Eleanor May Figueroa, 82, died Jan. 11 at her home in Champaign. Figueroa had worked as a cook for the UI Housing Division for 25 years, retiring in 1980.

John E. Gieseking, 97, died Jan. 2 at the Champaign County Nursing Home, Urbana. Gieseking was a soil chemistry professor and chief of the Soil Physics and Soil Survey at the UI when he retired in 1974 after 47 years of service. He was awarded emeritus status upon his retirement.
Memorials: an organization of the donor’s choice.

Richard Harry Hageman, 85, died Dec. 4 at Isabella County Medical Care Facility, Mount Pleasant, Mich. Hageman was a professor of plant physiology in the agronomy department. He was awarded emeritus status when he retired in 1984 after 30 years with the UI. Memorials: endowment at Kansas State University where he earned his bachelor’s degree.

Frances Hager, 79, died Jan. 17 at Champaign County Nursing Home,
Urbana. Hager taught microbiology labs at the UI, retiring in 1993. Memorials: Chemistry Department Scholarship Fund, Valparaiso University, Valparaiso, Ind.; or the Stem Cell Research Center at the Wisconsin Alumni Research Foundation, University of Wisconsin, 614 Walnut St., Madison, WI 53726.

L. Meyer Jones, 89, died Dec. 9 in Cary, N.C. Jones worked at the UI for 11 years serving as dean of the UI College of Veterinary Medicine for 8 years and head of Veterinary Research and Extension-Agriculture for 9. He was professor of veterinary anatomy, of physiology and of pharmacology during 1978-79, his last year on campus. Memorials: North Carolina Veterinary Medical Foundation, 4700 Hillsborough St., Raleigh, NC 27606.

Robert D. "Kirk" Kirkland Sr.,
69, died Dec. 21 at Provena Covenant Medical Center, Urbana. Kirkland was a furniture restorer for O&M, retiring in 1987. He had worked at the UI for 20 years. Memorials: Homer Fire and Rescue Squad.

Marjorie Ellen Melton, 72, died Dec. 22 at her Monticello home. Melton retired as a chief clerk from the UI’s College of Commerce and Business Administration in 1997. She had worked at the UI for 15 years. Memorials: building fund of First Christian Church, Monticello.

Helaine L. Moody-Eubanks, 77, died Dec. 27 at Carle Foundation Hospital, Urbana. Moody-Eubanks was a clinical counselor and adjunct assistant professor in educational psychology at the UI when she retired in 1990. She worked at the UI for 22 years. Memorials: Urban League of Champaign County.

Thomas B. Moran Jr., 85, died Jan. 4 at Provena Covenant Medical Center, Urbana. Moran worked as a building service worker for O&M, retiring in 1979. Memorials may be made to the building fund at St. Patrick’s Church, Urbana.

Cecil A. Moyer, 94, died Dec. 10 at Meadowbrook Health Center. Moyer worked at the UI for 41 years. During that time he served as head of the department of accounting for 12 years and also as director of the Center for International Education and Research in Accounting. He retired as professor of accountancy with emeritus status in 1972.

James David Sapp, 63, died Dec. 8 at The Carle Arbours, Savoy. Sapp worked for the UI as a stockroom keeper at Willard Airport. He retired in 2000 after 20 years
of service. Memorials: American Cancer Society.

Marvin H. Schmitz, 86, died Jan. 9 at Jackson Heights Nursing Home, Farmer City. Schmitz was a building service worker for O&M for 25 years, retiring in 1984. Memorials: Jackson Heights Nursing Home, Farmer City.

Byde Sherrill, 87, died Dec. 5 at Carle Foundation Hospital, Urbana. Sherrill was a musical technician III.
He retired from the School of Music in 1984 after 22 years of service.

Jack B. Smith, 76, died Jan. 16 at Bon Secours Rehabilitation Center, Venice, Fla. Smith retired from the UI in 1990 as housing administrator III after 25 years in the Housing Division. Memorials: Kiwanis Club, 412 Hessel Blvd., Champaign, IL 61820 or Kiwanis Little League, 24 Lake Park Drive, Champaign, IL 61822.

Allen F. Stephens, 71, died Jan. 7 in Melbourne Beach, Fla. Stephens retired from the UI in 1984 after 30 years of service. He was a research laboratory shop supervisor for mechanical and industrial engineering. Memorials: organization of the donor’s choice.

Virginia A. Stevens, 76, died Dec. 15 at her Rantoul home. Stevens worked in accounting at the UI for 16 years. She retired in 1992. Memorials: First Baptist Church of Rantoul or Provena Covenant Hospice Care Program.

Agnes M. Tobias, 76, died Dec. 30 at Meadowbrook Health Center, Urbana. Tobias was a clerk III at the UI’s College of Agriculture (now the College of Agricultural, Consumer and Environmental Sciences) from 1945 to 1953. Memorials: Education Fund at St. Patrick’s Church, Urbana.

Loren R. Walston, 78, died Jan. 5 at Provena Covenant Medical Center, Urbana. Walston was an electrician at the UI for 32 years before retiring in 1981. Memorials: American Cancer Society or a charity of the donor’s choice.

Cora Margaret Wascher, 83, died Dec. 4 at ManorCare Health Services of Champaign. Wascher was an admissions and records officer II at the UI College of Law when she retired in 1984 after 41 years of service. Memorials: St. Peter’s United Church of Christ, Champaign.

Vivian L. Wood, 82, died Dec. 24 at Provena Covenant Medical Center, Urbana. Wood had worked as admissions and records officer II for the UI College of Law from 1952 until 1983. Memorials: American Diabetes Association or the UI Small Animal Clinic.
