African malaria mosquito Anopheles gambiae on Christmas Eve 1999,

Viola
Apperson, 92,
died Oct. 3 at The Carle Arbours, Savoy. Apperson retired from
the UI in 1978 as a housekeeper after 20 years of service. Memorials:
Carle Auxiliary Guest House, 611 W. Park St., Urbana, IL 61801.
Martha L. Bloomer, 68,
died Oct. 8 at Care Centre of Champaign. Bloomer was a typing
clerk in the records department at the UI’s McKinley Health
Center. She worked there from 1982 until 1987. Memorials: Provena
Covenant Hospice Care Program or A Woman’s Place.
Opal G. Cox, 89,
died Oct. 7 at Hamilton Memorial Hospital, McLeansboro. Cox was
a retired cook at Allerton House, Robert Allerton Park, Monticello.
Memorials: to an organization of the donor’s choice.
Virginia J. Hendrix, 86,
died Oct. 1 at Champaign County Nursing Home, Urbana. She worked
in the UI alumni office from 1948 to 1950, in the UI president’s
office from 1950 to 1963 and retired as administrative assistant
to the secretary of the UI Board of Trustees in 1984 after 21
years. Memorials: First Presbyterian Church of Champaign; Empty
Tomb Inc., 301 N. Fourth St., Champaign, IL 61820; or an organization
of the donor’s choice.
Anner Ruth Stone Lemons, 50,
died Oct. 1 at her Champaign home. Lemons was an assistant food
production manager in Food Services. She had worked at the UI
since 1978.
Alice Lohrer, 95,
died Sept. 15 at Methodist Hospital of Chicago. Lohrer was a professor
emeritus of library science at the UI. She was a UI faculty member
from 1941 to 1974 and taught UI Extension classes from 1944 throughout
the 1960s. Memorials: Alice Lohrer Award Fund, UI Graduate School
of Library and Information Science, 501 E. Daniel St., MC-493.
Heinz von Foerster,
90, died Oct. 2 at his home in Pescadero, Calif. In 1949,
von Foerster came to the UI and held faculty appointments in electrical
engineering, computer science and biophysics. In 1958 he founded
the UI Biological Computer Lab, which became a renowned interdisciplinary
center for research in cybernetics and related fields including
computational technology. He served as the director of the Biological
Computer Laboratory until 1975, when he retired.
