2001 Honors: College of Liberal
Arts and Sciences
LAS
Deans Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching
Stephanie Foote, professor of English, John A. Lynn, professor of history,
and Adam T. Martinsek, professor of statistics, were honored as outstanding
teachers of undergraduates. Established to promote exceptional achievement
in undergraduate teaching, the award recognizes consistent excellent
performance, impact on students, innovative approaches to teaching and
other contributions to improved instruction, including influence on
the curriculum.
LAS Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching
by a Graduate Assistant
Three graduate assistants were honored for excellence in teaching. They
are Kristine Baxter, mathematics; Stephanie M. Hilger, comparative literature;
and Elizabeth T. Klett, English.
Humanities Award for Excellence in Teaching
The Humanities Award for Excellence in Teaching honors superior teaching
by one faculty member and one graduate teaching assistant each year.
John A. Lynn, professor of history, and Stephanie M. Hilger, graduate
teaching assistant in comparative literature, were honored this year.
LAS Academic Advising Awards
The Academic Advising Award recognizes and encourages quality advising
of undergraduate students in the college. Recipients are Alain Fresco,
academic adviser and professor of French, and Ruth Wene, assistant director
for academic affairs, School of Life Sciences.
Lynn Martin Award for Distinguished Woman Teacher
Lori Humphrey Newcomb, professor of English, was honored with an award
designed to promote exceptional achievement in undergraduate teaching
by women. The emphasis of the award is on innovative approaches to undergraduate
education.
LAS Nancy J. McCowen Distinguished Service Award
Aprel Orwick, staff secretary, history, was honored for exemplary service
to the college. Named for a former administrative assistant in the college,
the award recognizes someone who goes above and beyond an expected level
of service on an ongoing basis.
LAS Academic Professional Awards
The LAS Academic Professional Award was established to identify and
honor selected academic professionals for their outstanding contributions
to the college. This years recipients are Lawrence H. Broda, senior
research programmer, psychology; and Beth A. Morgan, life sciences technical
lab specialist, plant biology.
LAS Staff Awards
The LAS Staff Award honors selected staff members for their outstanding
contributions to the college. Recipients are Kathryn Schilson, staff
clerk, Spanish, italian and Portuguese; and Donna Zimmerman, staff clerk,
LAS administration.
