As one of more than
6,000 new members of the campus and Champaign-Urbana communities this
fall, I am in the process of making a new home for myself here, with
you. One way Ill do that is by participating in the community
and becoming invested in its success.
As a psychologist, I know that we experience life as meaningful and
satisfying to the extent that we participate in tasks that have value
to both the community and to us personally. For example, volunteer work
brings rewards of social connection with others, a sense of community,
and a sense of personal purpose. As a newcomer, it is my duty to engage
with the community. Through participation, I will be building my new
home.
One of Chancellor Michael Aikens legacies at Illinois is his work
with the Champaign-Urbana community and especially his active interest
in revitalizing Campustown. Michael was a role model for those of us
who would engage with the community in ways that simultaneously improve
our place and bring us personal satisfaction.
Through the Campus Charitable Fund Drive, we have the opportunity to
give to causes that will build our community and strengthen humanity.
If you choose to participate, you can expect to strengthen your own
sense of place and well being. If you carefully select which agencies
you would like to support, you also will be building your knowledge
of this community and its needs.
"U & I: Partners for a Caring Community" is more than
a theme for our fund drive. Its a fundamental key to our personal
fulfillment and our sense of community.
Sincerely,
Nancy Cantor
