The Asian American Studies house makes its way down Nevada street toward its new site at 1208 W. Nevada, formerly lot D-13. The house is making room for the new Child Development Lab Annex, which will encompass 1003 and 1005 W. Nevada. The School of Music annex building at 1005 W. Nevada will be torn down and staff relocated to 909 W. Oregon.
Workers from Peter’s House Movers of Farmer City, Ill., moved the house. "We didn’t have any other place to move the Asian American Studies program," said Steve Hesselschwerdt, assistant director in the Office of Project Planning and Facility Management. "So it was actually cheaper to move that building than to build a new one. Not to mention, it’s a very nice old house with stained glass."
The house will undergo some renovation associated with the move and an annex will be added to the back of the house to replace the space lost from not having a basement at the new site. If all goes as planned the house should be ready for staff members to move back in by early fall, Hesselschwerdt said.
According to Sharon Lee, staff associate for Asian American Studies, 10 to 12 people regularly use the building, including four full-time staff members, faculty members and undergraduate interns. In addition, the program hosts monthly events on site.
