lends evidence to both sides of the hotly debated question of whether

Alleviating
and managing pain in animals is focus of new guidebook
Dogs
whine or whimper and may become timid or aggressive. Cats may purr or
growl and hide. Responses vary, but certain behaviors tell when an animal
is in pain. Managing and alleviating pain is the focus of a new guidebook
written by small animal specialists at the University of Illinois College
of Veterinary Medicine. more
Innovative projects will maintain
U.S. leadership in computer research
Researchers on the
Urbana-Champaign campus will receive a total of $17.2 million in funding
from the National Science Foundation. The total represents 19 percent
of the $90 million the NSF granted in its new Information Technology
Research initiative. more

Chancellor Michael
Aiken told the UI Board of Trustees Sept. 14 of some of the accomplishments
achieved at the Urbana campus over the last five years, and when he
was finished the board and others gave Aiken a hearty and lengthy ovation.

budget of more than $2.5 billion
The
UI Board of Trustees has approved an operating budget for the fiscal
year that began July 1 of slightly more than $2.5 billion, 3.9 percent
more than last year. more

On the Job: Joni Elsenpeter
Joni
Elsenpeter is a UI labor relations specialist, which means she works
with campus departments and employees to resolve or improve work-related
issues. Previously she worked in university administration, hearing
labor grievances. She has a UI masters degree in organizational
communication and is working on a second masters through the Institute
of Labor and Industrial Relations. She is also known by the name Joni
Laurence, which she uses when singing and performing. She has two CDs
to her credit. Her latest, "Daphne Speaks," was released last
week. more

Hans
Julius Brems, 84, died Sept. 16 at Carle Foundation Hospital, Urbana.
Brems was a professor emeritus of economics who started teaching at
the UI in 1954. He was a leader in the history of economic thought,
publishing eight books, including "Fiscal Theory: Government, Inflation
and Growth" and "Pioneering Economic Theory, 1630-1980: A
Mathematical Restatement." He retired in 1986. Memorials: UI Foundation,
Harker Hall, MC-386.
Thomas Krizan, 80, died Sept. 8 at Carle Foundation Hospital,
Urbana. Krizan was a professor of physical education at the UI for 32
years. Memorials: the family or Immanuel Lutheran Church, Belvidere.
David O. Matthews, 80, died Aug. 30 while visiting family in
Connecticut. Matthews was the director of Campus Recreation at the UI
from 1962-1979 and served as chair of the planning committee for the
IMPE Building. He also was a professor in the department of kinesiology
at the UI from 1962-1990. Memorials: David O. Matthews Memorial Fund,

Lillian Easton, 56, died Sept. 14 at Carle Foundation Hospital,
Urbana. Easton was a librarian at the UI College of Veterinary Medicine
for 20 years. Memorials: American Cancer Society or the American Heart
Association.
