Gap junction protein vital to successful pregnancy, researchers find

Researchers studying a critical stage of pregnancy – implantation of the embryo in the uterus – have found a protein that is vital to the growth of new blood vessels that sustain the embryo. Without this protein, which is produced in higher quantities in the presence of estrogen, the embryo is unlikely to survive. Full story

Trustees discuss budgetary concerns at Sept. 11 meeting

Among the newcomers to the Urbana campus are tenure/tenure track faculty members whose appointments began this summer or fall. Kelly honored with Academy of American Poets fellowship

Brigit Pegeen Kelly, a professor of English, was named recipient of the 2008 Academy Fellowship from the Academy of American Poets. The honor includes a $25,000 stipend. English department head Curtis Perry said selection as a fellow by the academy represents the highest achievement for a contemporary poet. Full story

2008 Distinguished Teacher/Scholars announced

The Teaching Advancement Board recently selected Annie Abbott, a professor and director of the Spanish & Illinois program in the School of Literatures, Cultures and Linguistics, and Rajeshwari Pandharipande, a professor of linquistics, of Sanskrit and of comparative literature, as its Distinguished Teacher/Scholars for the 2008-2009 academic year.

Victor “Vick” Apke, 71, died Aug. 30 at his home in Greenview, Ill. Apke was a storekeeper II in the small animal clinic in the UI College of Veterinary Medicine from 1960 until 1977. Memorials: ALS Foundation.

Mark D. Aquino, 52, died Sept. 12 at the Hoopeston Regional Health Care Center. Aquino was a master firearm instructor at the Police Training Institute. Memorials: to the family for a trust for his son, Rico, or to Carle Hospice.

Edward Sanford Berry Jr., 80, died Aug. 24 at Medical University of South Carolina. Berry taught bassoon in the School of Music for 40 years. He began as an instructor in 1953, became a professor of music in 1961, and retired in 1993. He also performed in the Faculty Woodwind Quintet and was a charter member of Sinfonia da Camera. Memorials: Champaign-Urbana Symphony, 701 Devonshire Drive, C-24, Champaign, IL 61820, or Sinfonia da Camera, 909 W. Oregon St., Urbana, IL 61801.

Michael Edward Ewald, 60, died Sept. 12 at his St. Joseph home. Ewald had been a professor of trumpet at the UI since 1990.

Pamela K. Hutchins, 49, died Sept. 10 at Provena Covenant Medical Center, Urbana. Hutchins worked for UI Facilities and Services as a building service worker from 1994 to 2002.
