Robert C. Fonner, 91, died Aug. 12 at the Piatt County Nursing Home in Monticello. He worked for the UI Housing Division for more than 40 years as a maintenance supervisor. In the early 1960s, he assisted with the opening of Assembly Hall. Memorials: Faith United Methodist Church, 1719 S. Phyllis Jo Hill, 79, died Aug. 10 in Madison, Wis. During her 25-year tenure at the UI, Hill served as professor, associate dean and acting dean of the College of Applied Life Studies (now Applied Health Sciences). She retired in 1977. William J. Hylbert, 94, died July 31 at Provena Covenant Medical Center, Urbana. He worked at the UI for 28 years, retiring in 1974 as a personnel placement officer. Frederick Seitz, 96, died March 2 in New York City. Seitz was the founder of the influential solid-state physics group at the UI, to which he came as a professor in 1949. John Bardeen was among the core group of faculty members Seitz hired. He became head of the physics department in 1957 and took the lead in establishing a federally funded materials research laboratory at Illinois, which now bears his name. In 1964, he left Illinois to become the first full-time president of the National Academy of Sciences.
Russell G. Voyles, 88, died Aug. 10 at his Ridge Farm home. He retired from the UI as a finish carpenter after 18 years of service. Memorials: Ridge Farm Church of the Nazarene, 100 E. Woodyard Ave., Ridge Farm, IL 61870.
