Team discovers new inhibitors of estrogen-dependent breast cancer cells

Researchers have discovered a new family of agents that inhibit the growth of estrogen-dependent breast cancer cells. The finding, described today at a meeting of the Endocrine Society, has opened an avenue of research into new drugs to combat estrogen-dependent breast cancers. Full story

Silicon photonic crystals key to optical cloaking, researchers say

Now you see it, soon you might not, researchers at the UI say. In computer simulations, the researchers have demonstrated an approximate cloaking effect created by concentric rings of silicon photonic crystals. The mathematical proof brings scientists a step closer to a practical solution for optical cloaking. Full story

Dorothy Louise DeMotte, 82, died June 18 at her home in Montrose, Colo. DeMotte worked at the UI for 16 years, retiring in 1986 as an administrative secretary in the School of Social Work. Memorials: Hospice and Palliative Care of Western Colorado, P.O. Box 1804, Montrose, CO 81402, or to First United Methodist Church in Champaign.

Martha Ann “Marty” Glenn, 69, died June 27 at Provena Covenant Medical Center in Urbana. Glenn worked at the UI for more than 37 years, retiring in 1994 as an administrative secretary with Grants and Contracts. Memorials: Homer United Methodist Church or the American Cancer Society.

Cherie Del Lenz, 75, died June 18 at Provena Covenant Medical Center in Urbana. Lenz worked in the Office of Student Affairs for 35 years, retiring in 1989 as a personnel officer IV. Memorials: Grace Lutheran Church in Champaign, the American Cancer Society or the Champaign County Humane Society.

Jack Riley, 84, died June 16 at Windsor of Savoy retirement facility. Riley worked at the UI for 21 years, retiring in 1990 as assistant dean in the College of Law. Memorials: for the preservation of Hebron Cemetery, c/o Airsman-Hires Funeral Home, Illinois 107, Box 341, Griggsville, IL 62340.
