As this year’s sniffling-sneezing season approaches, there’s a hint of hope present in the pre-germ-season air. In a study scheduled for publication in the August issue of the American Journal of Chinese Medicine, a team of kinesiologists at the University of Illinois suggest that older adults who adopt an exercise regimen combining Taiji and Qigong may get an extra boost from their annual flu shot. The mating ritual of the honey bee is a mysterious affair, occurring at dizzying heights in zones identifiable only to a queen and the horde of drones that court her. Now a research team led by the University of Illinois has identified an odorant receptor that allows male drones to find a queen in flight. The receptor, on the male antennae, can detect an available queen up to 60 meters away. Full story

New Faces 2007
Among the newcomers to the Urbana campus are more than 7,500 freshmen and about 100 tenure/tenure track faculty members whose appointments began this summer or fall. Inside Illinois continues its tradition of introducing some of the new faculty members on campus and will feature at least two new colleagues in each fall issue.

Lisa Ann Busjahn, 51, died Aug. 25 in Champaign. Busjahn was managing editor at the Building Research Council at the School of Architecture. She worked at the UI from 1992 to 1997. Memorials: Champaign County Health Care Consumers, Chevra Kadisha of the Champaign-Urbana Jewish Federation or Social Action Committee of Sinai Temple of Champaign.

George Clayton, 90, died Aug. 28 at Carle Foundation Hospital in Urbana. He was a professor of architecture at the UI from 1950 to 1985. Memorials: Wesley United Methodist Church in Urbana or Grand Traverse Regional Land Conservancy, 3860 North Long Lake Road, Suite D, Traverse City, MI 49684.

Roy M. “Pat” Elder, 73, died Aug. 27 at Carle Foundation Hospital in Urbana. Elder retired in 1993 as a building service worker at the Illini Union. He worked at the UI for 27 years. Memorials: to the family at First State Bank, 801 S. Main St., Tuscola.

Walter Erwin Hanson, 92, died Aug. 26 in Tuscola. Hanson retired in 1977 after more than 31 years as a storekeeper for the UI Operation and Maintenance Division (now Facilities and Services). Memorials: First United Methodist Church of Urbana, 304 S. Race Street, Urbana, IL 61801.

Harold W. Hawkins, 81, died Aug. 27 in Monticello. He worked for the UI as a housing maintenance inspector for 30 years before retiring in 1990. Memorials: American Cancer Society and Kirby Hospital, Monticello. John C. Mahaffey, 86, died Sept. 1 at Meadowbrook Health Center, Urbana. He worked as an accountant in the UI business office for 28 years, retiring in 1977. Memorials: UI Foundation Mahaffey Fund or Parkland College Foundation.

Opal E. Davis Norris, 93, died Aug. 21 at her home in Villa Grove. Norris retired from the UI Office of School and College Relations in December 1978. Memorials: Murdock United Methodist Church.

Verle Forrest Walters, 91, died Aug. 8 in Mesa, Ariz. He retired from the UI in 1974 as an instrument and measurement technician II in the chemistry department. He worked at the UI for more than 34 years.
