Research suggests fitness may reduce inflammation
A recent study by kinesiology and community health researchers at the University of Illinois provides new evidence that may help explain some of the underlying biological mechanisms that take place as the result of regular exercise. According to the researchers, that knowledge could potentially lead to a better understanding of the relationship between exercise and inflammation. Full story

Researchers use new approach to predict protein function
In a paper published online this month in the journal Nature Chemical Biology, researchers report that they have developed a way to determine the function of some of the hundreds of thousands of proteins for which amino acid sequence data are available, but whose structure and function remain unknown. Latino ballplayers played key role in overcoming game's racial barriers
Despite the wealth of information available to them, baseball writers, historians and aficionados somehow have managed to bench one of the game’s greatest stories.
So says the author of a new book that chronicles the role of Latinos in America’s favorite pastime – they not only played great ball, but did so “while negotiating the color line at every turn."

Semiconductor membrane mimics biological behavior of ion channels
A semiconductor membrane designed by researchers at the University of Illinois could offer more flexibility and better electrical performance than biological membranes. Built from thin silicon layers doped with different impurities, the solid-state membrane also could be used in applications such as single-molecule detection, protein filtering and DNA sequencing. Sylvia Manning, UIC chancellor since 1999, announced July 12 that she will retire from UIC at the end of 2007. Manning leaves a legacy of campus expansion and enhancement and of rapid growth in UIC’s academic research enterprise. Full story

Ryan Dick, a recent master’s degree recipient in the UI School of Architecture from Elmhurst, Ill., is among 18 students nationwide to be named to the Luce Scholars Program for a yearlong experience in Asia. Full story

Kenneth Cooley, 75, died July 10 at Carle Foundation Hospital, Urbana. He worked 32 years as a print supervisor in the Stenographic Bureau at the UI. Memorials: Living Word Fellowship Church, St. Joseph.

Dale Allen Davis, 52, died July 14 at Carle Foundation Hospital. Davis had been an Assembly Hall attendant for Krannert Center for the Performing Arts since 1977.

William Jurgens Donaldson, 81, died July 6 at Carle Foundation Hospital, Urbana.  Donaldson worked at the UI for more than 21 years, retiring in 1991 as a recycling coordinator for the Housing Division.

David Louis Dressel, 60, died July 1 at his home in Belleville, Ill. Dressel worked at the UI for 15 years, retiring in 2002 as the director of planning design and construction. Memorials: St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital.

J. Robert Kelly, 90, died July 4 at Meadowbrook Healthcare Center, Urbana. Kelly was a professor of music composition and theory at the UI for 30 years. Memorials: University Place Christian Church or the Clark-Lindsey Village Friendship Club.

Richard “Gene” Miebach, 77, died July 3 at his home in Philo. Miebach worked at the UI for 35 years at the UI Physical Plant. He was a grounds-worker and an operating engineer.  Memorials: St. Thomas School.

Lorman “Larry” Ratner, 74, died July 14 at Carle Foundation Hospital. Ratner had been an adjunct professor of history since 1999. Memorials: UI Library.
