Initiative will put Illinois at forefront of farm bioenergy production
A $500 million research program announced today by the energy company BP will bring farm bioenergy production to Illinois on a grand scale, say researchers at the UI.

Scientists identify molecular cause for one form of deafness
Scientists exploring the physics of hearing have found an underlying molecular cause for one form of deafness, and a conceptual connection between deafness and the organization of liquid crystals, which are used in flat-panel displays.

UI geologists have located a huge chunk of Earth’s lithosphere that went missing 15 million years ago.

Institute for Genomic Biology facility opens this spring
Four years after Illinois Gov. Rod R. Blagojevich and UI officials broke ground at a muddy site on Gregory Drive in Urbana, the Institute for Genomic Biology will officially open its $75 million, 186,000-square-foot facility in March. Some 250 researchers already work in the institute’s offices and laboratories.

Project aims to serve returning GIs suffering from traumatic brain injury
Thanks to a $1 million, five-year training grant from the U.S. Department of Education, Proctor and colleagues at the UI, working with staff at area and regional hospitals, are hopeful that the situation will improve soon for those suffering from pediatric TBI – traumatic brain injury in people 21 or younger.

Forum participants discuss racism, diversity issues
On Feb. 1, about 2,300 people – including students, faculty members, community residents and American Indians who had traveled from as far away as Chicago – packed Foellinger Auditorium and satellite locations at the Illini Union and Gregory Hall for an open forum titled “Racism, Power and Privilege at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign." Visiting acpros, UI reach agreement for union contract
After several months of negotiations, including the assistance of a federal mediator, the UI reached its first agreement with about 300 visiting academic professionals at the Urbana campus represented by the Visiting Academic Professionals/AAP-IEA-NEA bargaining unit.

Campus strives for ‘continuous improvement’ in operating efficiently
Policies and procedures in the areas of budgeting, human resources, management reporting, promotion and tenure, and travel expenses and reimbursement were identified as needing overhauls in a recent survey of deans, directors and department heads on the Urbana campus. The online survey, conducted Nov. 28-Jan. 2, was part of President B. Joseph White’s “Improving the System” initiative, which began in July.

A Minute with … Christopher Span
Christopher Span is a professor of educational policy studies who specializes in the study of African-American educational history, especially in the South prior to 1900. He is working on a book about the efforts of former slaves in Mississippi to establish schools and become educated following emancipation. Span was interviewed by the News Bureau’s education editor, Craig Chamberlain.

Events commemorate Black Chorus conductor’s 25 years
It’s no wonder the little car icon – advising patrons to allow extra time for parking – has been posted on the Krannert Center for the Performing Arts page promoting the Black Sacred Music Symposium concert on Feb. 18. The parking garage is likely to fill up fast as alumni of the Black Chorus – and countless other friends and admirers of the ensemble – return to campus to take part in the 7:30 p.m. performance planned to celebrate Ollie Watts Davis’ 25th anniversary as the group’s conductor.

Illinois professor to be inducted into National Inventors Hall of Fame
Paul C. Lauterbur, Nobel laureate and UI chemistry professor, will be inducted into the National Inventors Hall of Fame. Lauterbur was selected for his pioneering work in the development of magnetic resonance imaging, an important tool in modern medicine. Full story

Two elected to membership in National Academy of Engineering
University of Illinois Vice Chancellor for Research Charles F. Zukoski and electrical and computer engineering professor P.R. Kumar have been elected to membership in the National Academy of Engineering, the academy announced Feb. 8. Full story

David William Bonham, 81, died Feb. 5 in Naperville. He retired from the UI in 1987 as special assistant to the executive vice president. He also worked in the accounting and auditing departments. Memorials: Knox Presbyterian Church Building Fund. 

Richard Virdin Evans, 76, died Jan. 28 at his Champaign home. He retired from the UI in business administration after 30 years. Memorials: Carle Foundation Hospital Pediatric Oncology Research Fund, 611 W. Park St., Urbana, IL 61801.

Grace Jay, 91, died Jan. 30 at the Champaign County Nursing Home in Urbana. Jay retired from the UI where she was a clerk. Memorials: Provena Covenant Medical Center Hospice, 1400 W. Park St., Urbana, IL 61801.

Doris J. Jean, 73, died Jan. 28 at Provena Covenant Medical Center, Urbana. She retired from the UI as an accounting technician in 1990. Memorials: American Heart Association, 3816 Paysphere Circle, Chicago, IL 61604; or Champaign County Humane Society, 1911 E. Main St., Urbana, IL 61802.

Dorothy Rae McAndrews, 91, died Jan. 20 at her El Paso, Texas home. She was an administrative secretary to the president at the UI and retired after 30 years. Memorials: First Baptist Church of El Paso.

Joseph Wayne Ray, 86, died Feb. 8 at his Garden City, Idaho home. He was a plumber at the UI for 24 years. Memorials: American Cancer Society, American Heart Association, American Diabetes Association or the Alzheimer’s Association.

Maxine LaVerne Ruwe,
86, died Jan. 28 at Provena Covenant Medical Center, Urbana. She worked for the UI for 20 years. Memorials: American Cancer Society.

Bert Austin Sandy, 84, died Feb. 7 at Carle Foundation Hospital, Urbana. He retired after 44 years of working for the Illini Union.

Janet E. Sawyer, 92, died Feb. 1 at her daughter’s home in Champaign. She worked in the Binding Division of the UI Library for 11 years, retiring in 1984. Memorials: First United Methodist Church of Champaign, Empty Tomb or the Depression Bipolar Support Alliance of Urbana-Champaign.

Herman “Lynn” Stalker, 75, died Feb. 8 at his Champaign home. Stalker was an instrument maker at the UI nuclear engineering department for 35 years. Memorials: Carle Hospice Program, 206A W. Anthony Drive, Champaign, IL 61822; Champaign County Humane Society, 1911 E. Main St., Urbana, IL 61802; Gideons International Loudoun Camp, P.O. Box 1143, Sterling, VA 20167.

Mercedes Kahlert Stegemeier, 85, died Feb. 2 at Carle Foundation Hospital, Urbana. She was a Spanish teacher at the UI until 1948. Memorials: Professor Henri Stegemeier Fund for Emblematica at the UI Library Development Office, Room 227, 1408 W. Oregon St., Urbana, IL 61801.

Ruth Wood, 94, died Jan. 28 at Champaign County Nursing Home, Urbana. She retired from the UI in 1974 from housekeeping.
