John D. Alexander, 85, died Aug. 11 at Provena Covenant Medical
Center. Alexander was a professor of pedology (the scientific
study of soils) in the department of agronomy for nearly 40 years,
retiring in 1985 as professor emeritus. Memorials: First United

Evelyn C. “Eve” Bristol, 81, died July 28 at Provena Covenant Medical
Center, Urbana. Bristol came to the UI in 1965 as an associate professor
of Slavic languages and literatures and was promoted to professor in 1990. She
retired in 2003.
John Garvey, 85, died July 18 in Silver Spring, Md. Garvey was UI professor emeritus
of music. He joined the UI School of Music faculty in 1948. He continued as the
principal teacher of viola and as a member of the Walden String Quartet until
the 1970s. He conducted the School of Music’s chamber orchestra, started
the UI Jazz Band in 1960 and remained the principal faculty member in the jazz
field until his retirement in 1991. He also was active in the school’s
activities in new and experimental music. A campus memorial service is tentatively
set for Oct. 14.
Sarah May Hollingsworth-Larsen, 90, died Aug. 5 at St. Rose Dominican Hospital,
Henderson, Nev. Hollingsworth-Larsen was a clerk II in the College of Agricultural,
Consumer and Environmental Sciences.
Florence Mulcahey, 87, died Aug. 2 at Provena Covenant Medical Center, Urbana.
Mulcahey worked at the UI for 17 years, retiring in 1980 as a housekeeping supervisor at
the Illini Union. Memorials: Holy Cross School, 406 W. White St., Champaign IL

Barbara Jane Smalley, 80, died Aug. 6 at Clark-Lindsey Village, Urbana. Smalley
was an assistant professor of English and of comparative literature at the UI
from 1968 until she became an associate professor of English in 1975. She taught
in the department of English until she retired in 1996.
Inez Elaine Wildemuth, 79, died July 30 at The Carle Arbours, Savoy. Wildemuth
was a transcribing secretary in the Office of Instructional Resources. She worked
at the UI for 18 years, retiring in 1987. Memorials: First United Methodist Church,
210 W. Church St., Champaign IL 61820 or the Alzheimer’s Association.
