Three Illinois researchers receive Presidential Early Career Awards
Three UI researchers were among 56 young researchers who received a 2005 Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers, the highest honor bestowed by the U.S. government on young professionals at the outset of their independent research careers. Full story

 

Critical research initiatives receive recognition, funding
Six projects have been selected to receive seed funding through the Critical Research Initiatives program, an annual competition sponsored by the Vice Chancellor for Research. The CRI program, now in its 11th year, was established to stimulate continued innovation and outstanding scholarship on campus. Full story

Linda Graves Ackerson, 52, died July 17 at her Champaign home. Ackerson had worked at the UI for eight years and was assistant engineering librarian and a professor of library administration at the time of her death. Memorials: Habitat for Humanity, Carle Hospice or Carle Cancer Center.

Marjorie B. Botsfield, 81, died July 18 at BroMenn Regional Medical Center, Normal. Botsfield worked at the UI for 27 years, retiring in 1983 as a secretary at McKinley Health Center. Memorials: The Village United Methodist Church, Hot Springs Village, AR 71909.

Kathryn G. Hansen, 94, died July 26 at The Carle Arbours, Savoy. Hansen worked at the UI Business Office and the Personnel Services Office. In 1948, she founded The Secretariat, a UI organization of civil-service employees with qualifications that meet or exceed those of secretary III. It was created for employees to meet with others in similar positions and provide professional development activities. Memorials: UI Foundation or First Presbyterian Church of Champaign.

Ines C. Keller, 90, died July 18 at The Carle Arbours, Savoy. Keller was an instructor in verbal communication at the UI from 1968 to 1972. Memorials: Champaign County YMCA Capital Campaign, 500 W. Church St., Champaign, IL 61820.

Walter Philipp, 69, died July 19 while mountain climbing in his native Austria. Philipp had been a faculty member at the UI since 1964 and was currently professor emeritus of statistics and of mathematics. At the Beckman Institute for Advanced Science and Technology, he was a member of the Computational Electronics group and Molecular and Electronic Nanostructures research initiative.
