Key campus personnel will receive critical incident training
Beginning this month, employees in positions that could be called upon to handle a critical incident that could disrupt campus operations or threaten health and safety – such as a natural disaster or an avian flu pandemic – will begin an emergency preparedness training program. The training is part of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s National Incident Management System. Full story

Researchers discover which organs in Antarctic fish produce antifreeze
Thirty-five years ago Arthur DeVries of the UI first documented antifreeze glycoproteins (AFGPs) in Antarctic notothenioid fishes. This month three colleagues report they’ve solved the ensuing, long-running mystery of where these AFGPs, which allow the fish to survive in icy waters, are produced. Full story
Research reinforces findings that Chinese exercises benefit older adults
New work by researchers at the UI lends strength to previous research documenting the health benefits of Qigong and Taiji among older adults who practice these ancient Chinese martial-arts forms. Full story

Five faculty members have been appointed 2006-2007 associate provost fellows through the Illinois Executive Academic Leadership Program, recently created by Provost Linda Katehi. Full story

The National Center for Supercomputing Applications has named 13 UI faculty members as faculty fellows for the 2006-2007 academic year. Full story
  Aggravated assaults declined on UI campus, latest report shows
The number of aggravated assaults and criminal sexual assaults decreased in the UI reporting district during the reporting period from Sept. 1, 2005 to May 14, 2006. The number of robberies and other sex offenses (peeping Toms and public indecency) increased during that time, according to statistics released by the Division of Public Safety. Full story

Barbara Ray Buddemeier, 92, died June 8 in Springfield. Buddemeier was a Latin teacher at Uni High. Memorials: Champaign County Humane Society, 1911 E. Main, Urbana, IL 61802 or Nature Conservancy, Attn: Treasury (Web/Support), 4245 N. Fairfax Drive, Suite 100, Arlington, VA 22203.

Carmel “Cricket” C. Barger, 92, died June 12 at Provena Covenant Medical Center, Urbana. Barger worked at the UI for 11 years, retiring in 1974 as a foodservice supervisor for the Illini Union. Memorials: Champaign Park District Plant a Tree Program.

Annis E. Davies, 84, died June 29 at Carle Foundation Hospital, Urbana. Davies was a secretary at the UI Alumni Association for 16 years. Memorials: Country Health Nursing Home, Gifford.

Billy Morrow Jackson, 80, died June 16 at Provena Covenant Medical Center, Urbana. Jackson, professor emeritus at the UI School of Art and Design, was a professor of art at the UI for 33 years, retiring in 1987. His work is displayed in more than 40 prominent galleries and museums. Memorials: Krannert Art Museum.

Anthony F. Karich, 79, died June 11 at ManorCare Health Services, Champaign. Karich was a clinical instructor at the UI College of Medicine. Memorials: St. Matthew’s Building Fund, 1307 Lincolnshire Drive, Champaign, IL 61821, or to Developmental Services Center, 1304 W. Bradley Ave., Champaign, IL 61821.

Sereda M. Lindsay, 67, died June 12 at the Carle Arbours, Savoy. Lindsay worked at UI for 25 years, retiring in 1993 as a baker III in the Housing Division.

Max Noel Pike, 96, died June 21 at his Monticello home. Pike worked at the UI for 22 years, retiring in 1978 as a supervisor of accident compensation at the Personnel Accident Compensation Office. Memorials: American Heart Association, Piatt County Division.

Herbert W. Schmidt, 72, died June 19 at his Mahomet home. Schmidt worked at the UI for 34 years, retiring in 1999 as a routing supervisor for Facilities and Services Division. Memorials: American Cancer Society or Hospice of Champaign County.

Jeffrey N. Taylor, 57, died at Ogeechee Area Hospice Inpatient Facility, Statesboro, Ga. Taylor was a professor of biology. Memorials: Ogeechee Area Hospice, P.O. Box 531, Stateboro, GA 30459.

Edith Violet Trinkle, 87, died June 27 at Victorian Nursing Home, Rockford. Trinkle was a purchasing clerk and a supervisor, retiring in 1984. Memorials: American Diabetes Association, 30 N. Michigan Ave., Suite 2015, Chicago, IL 60602.

Leah Margaret Williams, 89, died June 24 at Heartland Health Care Center, Paxton. Williams worked for the UI Housing Division for 19 years, retiring in 1982 as a maid. Memorials: Carle Hospice.

Robert Williamson, 75, died June 18 at Provena Covenant Medical Center, Urbana. Williamson worked at the UI from 1986 to 1996 as a herder for UI Extension. Memorials: Tuscola Health Care Center or American Stroke Association, 7272 Greenville Ave., Dallas, TX 75231-4596.
