Australian scholar named dean of College of Education
Mary Kalantzis, a professor of education and former dean at RMIT University, Melbourne, Australia, has been named the new dean of the UI College of Education, pending approval by the UI Board of Trustees at its May 11 meeting in Chicago.

Ilesanmi Adesida, who has served as the interim dean of the UI College of Engineering since June 2005, has been chosen to be the next dean of the College of Engineering, pending approval of the UI Board of Trustees at its May 11 meeting in Chicago.

Using blogs in course work helps improve students’ writing
Several years ago when Christian Sandvig, then a new professor of speech communication, was developing a course called Communication Technology and Society, he wanted to make the course writing intensive, but was concerned about grading the work produced by up to 100 students. Sandvig ended up trying a high-tech twist:  blogs.

NCAA edict threatens Chief Illiniwek tradition
The National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) issued a final ruling April 28 against the UI’s continuing use of Chief Illiniwek. Absent a change in this 80-year-old tradition, the NCAA will prohibit the school from hosting NCAA championship events.

Financial group to be investigated for defrauding state employees

John Douglas Dyson, 87, died April 28 at Carle Foundation Hospital, Urbana. Dyson was a professor of electrical  engineering at the UI for 33 years, retiring in 1985 as professor emeritus. His research specialized in radiomagnetics and antennas.

Norma Marsh, 83, died April 26 at Champaign County Nursing Home, Urbana. Marsh worked at the McKinley Health Center  for 19 years and retired in 1985 as a typing clerk II. Memorials: Alzheimer’s Association, 2027 S. Main St., Suite 3, Bloomington, IL 61704.

Arlene Elizabeth Sherwood, 74, died April 23 at Carle Foundation Hospital, Urbana. Sherwood was a typing clerk III in the purchasing department for seven years, retiring in 1994. Memorials: American Cancer Society, 2509 S. Neil St., Champaign, IL 61820.
