Herman releases five-year
Strategic Plan for Urbana campus
Establish
the UI as the premier public university recognized for comprehensive
excellence. That is Chancellor Richard Herman’s vision
for the Urbana campus, which he delineated in a recently released
draft of the campus Strategic Plan.

skin, slow-growing gills protect larval stage of Antarctic
fish
Very thin but hardy, unblemished skin and slow developing
gills appear to be keys to survival for newly hatched Antarctic
notothenioids, a group of fish whose adults thrive in icy
waters because of antifreeze proteins (AFPs) in their blood.

changes planned for university administration
UI President
B. Joseph White recently announced several organizational changes
within university administration, including the creation of
a vice president and chief financial officer position in order
to strengthen the university’s financial management.

solar home for contest in Washington, D. C.

to membership in National Academy of Engineering
Incoming UI Provost and Vice Chancellor
for Academic Affairs Linda P.B. Katehi and College of Engineering
Interim Dean Ilesanmi Adesida have been elected to membership
in the National Academy of Engineering, the academy announced
Feb. 10.

LaVonne Crawford, 79, died Feb. 5 at Meadowbrook Healthcare
Center, Urbana. Crawford worked at the UI Rehabilitation-Education

Alma Henson, 90, died Feb. 11 at The Carle Arbours Court, Savoy. Henson worked
at the UI for 22 years, retiring in 1982 as a building service worker in Housing.
Memorials: Carle Hospice or the Alzheimer’s Association.
Donald J. Mueller, 85, died Feb. 2 at his Champaign home. Mueller was a service
inspector at UI, retiring in 1982. Memorials: Carle Hospice, 206A W. Anthony
Drive, Urbana, IL 61801; or Holy Cross Catholic Church, 403 W. Clark St., Champaign,
IL 61820.
Mildred Patterson, 100, died Jan. 24 at Provena United Samaritans
Medical Center, Danville. Patterson was a UI Extension 4-H specialist.
