PBS
series to air May 15 and 22
UI team contributes to NOVA
Two upcoming "NOVA" episodes to be broadcast locally on WILL-TV
will feature work by UI art and design professor Donna Cox; Bob Patterson,
a research programmer at the National Center for Supercomputing Applications;
and Lance Chong, a graduate student in industrial design.
"Beyond Human" will be presented as two one-hour shows airing
at 7 p.m. May 15 and 22. The program explores the synergy between modern
biology and technology, demonstrating how the line between man and machine
is beginning to blur.
According to producer Thomas Lucas, Cox and Patterson supervised students
and helped design animations in which humanoid robots walk through the
streets of Tokyo. Another scene, in which a robot works with firemen
to penetrate a burning building and save a dog, features animations
by Chong.
Survey Research Laboratory
Events to honor Seymour Sudman
A symposium and two conference sessions will be held in memory of Seymour
Sudman, world-renowned expert in survey research who died May 2, 2000.
The Seymour Sudman Symposium is scheduled for May 4-6 at Allerton Park
and Conference Center in Monticello. Most of the conference will constitute
an update of Sudman and Norman Brad-burns most heavily cited work,
"Response Effects in Surveys," with presentations by leading
scholars in survey methods. Additional presentations and panel discussions
will focus on some of Sudmans other contributions. In addition,
a service for Sudman, unveiling his memorial stone, will take place
at Roselawn Cemetery the afternoon of May 6. Those interested in attending
the symposium, should contact Debora Loos at d-loos@illinois.edu
or call 333-4241.
A session on "The Contributions of Seymour Sudman to Survey Research"
will be held at the annual conference of the American Association for
Public Opinion Research at 8:30 a.m. May 19. For more information, visit
www.aapor.org.
The American Statistical Association meetings, to be held this August,
will include a session titled "Seymour Sudman Memorial: Issues
in Sample Design and Response Effects." Further information is
available at www.amstat.org.
Intensive English Institute
Hosts needed for Japanese
students
The Intensive English Institute is hoping to recruit dozens of people
who will host visiting Japanese college students in Champaign-Urbana
this summer. (Hosting a student does not include the student living
in the hosts home.)
Japanese students from five universities will be staying on the UI campus
for three or four weeks in August while they study English at the UI
institute.
Hosts either families, couples or single people are needed
to spend a few hours a week with one or more of the students, so that
the students can meet people outside the classroom and practice their
English while sharing common, everyday activities such as meals, shopping
and entertainment.
In the past, hosts have said that they greatly enjoy spending time with
the students and that the experience allows them to learn more about
Japan and Japanese lifestyles.
Anyone interested in being a host should call Anna Kasten at the Intensive
English Institute at 333-6598.
